Why dressed-down Hollywood is laughing at Posh's impossibly over-done wardrobe
24th June 2007
Desperate to make a big style splash when she moves to the U.S., Victoria Beckham has been pulling out all the fashion stops with a constantly changing wardrobe of ever more outre outfits.
But while she may think she looks fabulous stepping off the plane in skin-tight black leggings, donning a lace couture dress for a stroll through the park and sporting wedge-heeled trainers to throw out the first pitch at Dodger Stadium, U.S.-style insiders are busy laughing behind her back.
Over-dressed and over there: Victoria Beckham looks out of place in designer clothes and heels in low-key Los Angeles
Indeed, it seems all too apparent that Victoria's uniform of tailored dresses and sky-high heels will have to change if she is going to survive in her new surroundings.
LA stylist Cliff Hoppus, who has worked with everyone from the contestants on American Idol to film star Rachel McAdams, says: "LA style is all about being low key. It's not about showing you have money or class, it's about making the point that you are so comfortable in yourself that you can wear whatever you want. Real LA people know how to dress down."
Off-duty snaps of LA's most famous leading ladies confirm Cliff's views. Jennifer Aniston seems to have trademarked her distinctive look of trendy designer jeans teamed with casual cotton tank tops, while Cameron Diaz models the latest in sportswear when she is photographed coming in and out of her gym.
Sometime British resident Gwyneth Paltrow appears to live in her Birkenstock sandals when in LA and her often messy, straggly hair suggests a woman who doesn't bother about looking perfect.
Even Brit-in-LA movie star Kate Beckinsale has adapted her look to fit in on the West Coast - she is regularly spotted in T-shirts and leggings shopping on Melrose Avenue with her daughter Lily.
According to Blaine Zuckerman, the West Coast editor of Glamour magazine: "We have no financial district in Los Angeles. Men and women go to work here in the sort of clothes people in other parts of the country wear on Casual Fridays.
"We dress in a way that is a relaxed version of the New York/Paris look. It is more comfortable and suitable to our lifestyle and weather."
Meanwhile, there's Victoria. The Americans woke up to the woman best known for being in "that girl band" when she started making regular house-hunting trips through LAX (Los Angeles international airport).
While stars such as Renee Zellweger and Beyonce get off planes sporting giant sunglasses and tracksuit bottoms, Victoria arrived in sky-high stilettos and skin-tight denim.
Her perpetual bra-free, breasts-at-attention look also caused derision. One widely sold U.S. magazine wrote an open letter to Victoria demanding she "put on her bra", while out and about.
"She looks as if she wants to get noticed. Most celebrities try to avoid that when getting off a plane," says Cliff. "She seems to want to cut a figure through the airport - which may say something about her personality."
Celebrities, particularly those with children, are often photographed at Disney theme parks. Uma Thurman was at Disney World last week with her children, wearing a brown cotton sundress and sandals, photographed grinning wildly with Minnie Mouse ears atop her head.
In stark contrast, when Victoria went to Disney World, she wore a see-through tank top minus a bra, drainpipe jeans and 5in heels. Anyone who has ever walked around this 400-acre theme park, will tell you it is tiring enough in comfortable, low-heeled shoes.
But the problem was never more obvious than when she appeared at Dodger Stadium. Celebrities at baseball games often sport the team's headgear, wave to fans in the stands and generally keep a low fashion profile.
Jennifer Garner, the actress wife of Ben Affleck, is a regular fixture at Boston Red Sox games - her face scrubbed of make-up, she will wear men's Tshirts to cheer on her team.
Even diva deluxe Jennifer Lopez dresses down for baseball appearances, with gold hoop earrings her only concession to fashion.
Victoria, however, wore tiny white shorts and 6in highheeled trainers to throw out the opening pitch.
"She obviously made an effort, but she's trying way too hard and really misses the mark," says Cliff. "She thought she'd get credit for wearing sneakers - but platform versions!
"Wearing Converse would have been much more stylish, making the outfit more casual. If she can just take it down a notch or two, she really would fit right in."
Blaine is also appalled at Victoria's high-heel addiction. "Mrs Beckham has fantastic legs and they're going to look good in any shoes she wears - she certainly doesn't need to wear platform sneakers.
"People in LA are not going to think less of her for wearing flip-flops or sandals - people here wear those to business meetings all the time."
When photographed alongside her famous friends, Victoria's sartorial missteps become all the more obvious.
"Out to dinner at The Ivy restaurant with new best friend Katie Holmes, Victoria wore a designer dress with an organza frill at the collar.
"Katie opted for a far more appropriate pair of jeans and a leather coat. It looked as if the women were going out for two completely different evenings."
"Maybe when she moves here, she'll hire an LA stylist who can help her realise she is really not getting it here," says Cliff.
"She should have at least asked Katie what she thought of her outfit before going out - which she clearly didn't. "Katie's choice is perfect for LA and The Ivy, which has outdoor patio seating. We just don't dress like this for dinner."
It appears that the selfproclaimed fashion "expert" Victoria Beckham still has a lot to learn about life across the pond.
